We are now coming to the end of January and all I have seen since the
beginning of the month is ‘Get fit’ ‘Here is a quick fix’ ‘Join a gym’ or ‘Detox’!
These messages are designed to make you feel bad for not doing more, or
worse, make you unhappy with yourself. Many of us ate too much over the
festive period, (especially me!) and maybe we got merry, but that is OK.
I will not push anyone I currently train or possibly will train this year, to get ‘fit’
this month. Fitness for me is not a short-term solution. It is a lifetime habit.
When I came back from my two week holiday, I found many of my clients had
also taken a few weeks’ break from all the hard work they had done with me
throughout the year. That’s OK. I took a break from exercise, too. There was no
harm in relaxing over the festivities, nor when you return to exercise, easing
back into classes at your own pace and in your own time. The key is to return
to exercise at a level you can manage.
Many of the people I work with have health conditions, and it is not as simple
as getting back to exercise with the aim of losing those pounds before the
summer. Symptoms of different conditions will dictate how well we can
manage factors such as cold weather, or lack of movement for a few weeks.
This is where I am proud of what 1st Step offers. We can push you when
needed, but can rein in when required to make sure you successfully start
moving again.
Small, consistent steps will lead to achieving your goal.
